“The Dolphins Would Come Right Through Where the SurfersWere”
The Margaret River Surf Pro was on when I was in town and it was a great bonus for us. The beach is set up like an amphitheater and sitting on the boardwalk watching the world’s best surfers was a real treat. There was a big crowd and a great atmosphere.
During the event and every day that I was down there we saw the local dolphins come through and put on a bit of a show. They would come right up to where the surfers were waiting and leap out of the waves, almost upstaging the surfers.
As we started our day we talked about there being something in the air at Monkey Mia that makes you feel like you belong. Just offshore we could see a pod of dolphins and some seabirds catching their morning snacks.
There are three stops on the Australian leg of the WSL Championship Tour: the Gold Coast, Bells Beach, and Margaret River. From my perspective — an American surf journalist — it’s a bit of a Goldilocks and the Three Bears situation. But in Margaret River I found a place and a contest that were jusssst right!
